The tear down and rebuild of my BJ60 has begun. What looks to be happening is that my 62 will be cleaned up back to stock for Sooz (she wants an auto) and all my good parts will be moved to the diesel. Axles, winches, everything....

About 2 weeks ago I picked up a frame from a '89 62 and some body parts from FJToys in Kirkland. Yes this is an extensive rebuild.

Pulled the engine and tranny last weekend with a bit of help from Eric and Caleb. (Fixing the rusty oil pan revealed metal chunks which turned out to be cam bearings). Lower end is in good shape but figured that I need to put some work into the upper end. Head is off to the machine shop and cam and lifters are off to another machinist in Tacoma. I am learning a whole lot about diesels along the way.

But if you count the different wagons we have parts from... I have parts from at least 4 wagons not counting my 62.

No new pictures but there is progress. Got most of my engine parts either here or on their way. Machine work is done on the cam and head. Should have the cam back soon and still waiting for valve springs.

Once the motor is back together I will start the frame swap. Make it easy on myself by setting the engine on an empty frame! Should make welding the new motor/tranny mounts easy. Might as well do something for the sliders at this point as well. I will post pics of all the frame changes.

After working on the wifes car I finally got the worst of the oil mess cleaned off the diesel block. Should have cleaned it before I took it out. Even found some of the original paint, might be gray still not sure. Looks like I will paint it Alpine Green, this is an old Deroit Diesel color.

The other adventure is the oil pan. Tried some welding and I am not sure it's saveable. Might be making a new pan. Not sure I would trust the old one even if it didn't leak due to the thickness of it from the rust. Don't want a rock flying up and punching a hole.

Valve springs (new) have become somewhat of a pain in the butt to get, might just put the old ones back for now. Can always change them in the future, don't even have to pull the head to do it either.

Put the bellhousing and throw out bearing back on the tranny. The interesting part about my diesel is that there is not an inspection cover on the bellhousing. Unlike the gas motor bellhousing it goes all the way around the flywheel, you have to pull the bellhousing to replace the clutch, pressure plate, flywheel and throw out bearing.

The other interesting thing we found out by comparing my diesel tranny to Eric's gas four speed is that they are not interchangeble. The diesel uses a 21 spline input to the motor and is almost 8 inches long while the gas tranny uses a 10 spline and is less than 7 inches long.

Drained all the old gear oil from tranny and transfer case. Don't feel like tearing down the t-case so I will probably add that hose mod that connects the two to get the oil back to the t-case. Most of my oil was in the tranny.

Also resealed the top cover on the tranny with a new gasket. And made the mod to the shifter support that will allow me to use 2 low. Lubed up all the pivots while it was apart as well.

Sandblasted the tranny mount for new paint and mounted the water pump back on the block. If all goes well I should have the head back tomorrow. Sadly with the old valve springs... Just have to change them down the road.

Got the head bolted back on the block Thursday night. Last night got a little busy as we added another wagon to my yard. It's the leftover wagon from Eric's tranny project and now it will be disconbobulated to save the diesel. Still a few parts to bolt to the motor but I got a jump on things today and bolted the engine and motor back together again. Big progress!

Next big project is to seperate the body and frame on the BJ and swap in a new to me frame. You can see it in the picture below.
